In Beautiful Me Maqoma challenges the notion of dance by working with three very successful choreographers, Akram Khan, Faustin Linyekula and Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe. These choreographers have contributed some minutes of their choreographic material in movement, music and text to create Beautiful Me. What inspired Maqoma to work with them is curiosity about their choreographic language, their connection to tradition and their styles, which are different from each other yet all, have something very profound and human in them.
Never before in Maqoma’s history of creation has he taken such a rigorous study and challenge of learning and mastering other’s choreographic language and knowledge. Gregory has gained much respect for their artistry and for the fact that all three artists are relatively young, but they are already fully masters of their art.
Maqoma has been challenged to create an extension of the material provided to reflect his ingenious choreographic landscape but also to create a true reflection of his chosen artists embodied in his body. In this project, Maqoma treats his body as a moving portrait that continues to reinterpret emotions, histories and find a transitional point in tradition and language that evolves in finding creative translations for unfamiliar elements.
It is out of a series of meetings between Maqoma and the three artists that he feels the importance of continued engagement to study learn and finally grow the seed.
Beautiful Me which has been commissioned by the FNB Dance Umbrella leaves, in its development-wake, a list of prominent residencies such as the Bates Festival in Maine (US) in August of 2005, in London (UK) in December 2006, the Dance Factory in Johannesburg (SA) occasionally in 2006/07 and at the CND studios in Paris in February.
